How to Get Cited by AI Search: A B2B Practical Guide

Usually, the how to guide to get cited by AI search tells you to publish more blog posts and add schema markup. That helps a little, but it skips the part a small B2B firm controls most: what the rest of the internet says about you.

AI engines do not trust a firm's own site on its own word. They look for the same facts repeated on LinkedIn, Google, review sites and other people's pages. So the order of work is: check where you stand, tidy the profiles engines cross-check, then edit pages and earn mentions.

Nothing here needs enterprise tooling. It needs a spreadsheet, an afternoon and someone who can edit your profiles.

A citation is a linked source an AI system used to build its answer. To earn one, you need short, direct, verifiable passages on your pages, backed by consistent third-party sources that confirm who you are, what you do and where. Engines cite what they can check.

The distinction matters. A citation is a link to your page. A mention is your brand named in the answer with no link. Semrush explains the difference, and it is worth knowing that AI systems do not always show citations at all.

You can also be cited without being named. One study of 3,981 domain appearances found 62% of citations were "ghost citations": the engine used the site but never said the brand in the answer. Being sourced and being remembered are separate wins, and you want both.

Step 2: Check where you stand today

Write down the five questions a buyer would ask about your service. For an IT support firm that might be "who provides managed IT support for small offices in Tallinn" or "what should an IT support contract include".

The sheet is your baseline: what buyers get told about you, and which sites are doing the telling.

Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, in Estonian and in English. Then log the results in a simple sheet:

  • Prompt and tool. The exact wording and where you asked it.
  • Cited sources. Which domains were linked, yours or others.
  • Brand named. Whether you appear in the answer text, separate from any link.
  • Who else appears. Competitors, directories, publications.

Be honest about what this shows. Answers vary by day, by phrasing and by tool, so treat the sheet as a pattern, not a verdict. One practitioner reports that ChatGPT typically cites around eight sources per answer while Perplexity often cites twenty or more. Treat that as indicative only.

The "who else appears" column is the useful one. Those are the sites you need to be present on.

Step 3: Rewrite pages so a passage can be lifted

Engines pull passages, not whole pages. Make each key page easy to quote.

One service page rewritten with a direct answer up top is worth more than ten untouched posts.

  • Question headings. Phrase a heading the way a buyer would ask it.
  • Direct answer first. Put the answer in the first sentence or two under the heading, then explain.
  • One checkable figure. Include a number with a named source, not a vague claim.
  • Visible updated date. Show when the page was last reviewed.

Start with the pages a buyer lands on after a click: the main service page and the page that explains how you work. In our experience running accounts, those are the pages that get read, so they are the ones worth editing first. A tidy blog archive can wait.

Keep the edit small. One service page rewritten properly beats ten posts nobody checks.

Step 4: Why do your profiles and reviews matter for AI citations?

Brands are significantly more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own website. Your LinkedIn page, Google listing and reviews are exactly those sources, and engines compare them against each other.

Engines and buyers check the same places, so your name, address and services must match everywhere.

If your website says "bookkeeping and payroll for manufacturers", LinkedIn says "business consulting" and Google lists you under a different address, the engine has no consensus to rely on. A buyer who checks the same three places sees the same mess.

What a consistent B2B profile looks like

Go through every profile with the same checklist. Our LinkedIn and lead generation support starts with this same pass.

  • Same service wording. Use one plain description of what you do and for whom, repeated across LinkedIn, Google, Instagram and your site.
  • Same name and location. Company name, address, service area and opening hours should match exactly.
  • Same proof. Certifications, partnerships and the types of client you serve should be stated the same way everywhere.
  • Recent activity. The last few LinkedIn and Instagram posts should show the work you describe, not a six-month gap.
  • Named people. Founders and key staff should have complete profiles that link to the company page.

Why review replies count as extra text about your business

A reply is a public paragraph attached to your listing. When you answer a review by naming the service, the type of project and the town, you add accurate text that supports everything else.

Replies also show a buyer that someone is paying attention. Our review replies work follows that rule: specific, calm and never copied from a template.

Step 5: Earn mentions on sites AI engines already trust

Your Step 2 sheet already lists the sites engines cite in your field. Aim to appear on a few of them. Search Engine Land's analysis of 8,000 AI citations shows how widely engines draw on sources beyond brand websites.

Realistic routes for a small B2B firm:

  • Industry directories. Claim and complete the listings your sector actually uses.
  • Partner pages. Ask suppliers and software partners to list you with the same description you use everywhere.
  • Podcasts and webinars. A guest appearance creates a page that names you and your speciality.
  • Community answers. Give useful, signed answers in the forums and groups your buyers read.

None of this guarantees a citation. It also does not follow Google rank: one analysis found the share of pages cited in Google AI Overviews that also ranked in the top 10 fell from 76% to 38% between July 2025 and February 2026. Ranking well is no longer enough, and ranking badly is not fatal.

Step 6: Keep it fresh: how to get cited by AI search is a monthly habit

Set aside an hour a month. Re-run the same prompts from Step 2 and add the results to the sheet. Refresh one key page: check the figure, update the date, tighten the first answer.

Then look at referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics. Attribution is imperfect, since many answers are read without a click, and organic click-through has dropped 61% on queries where a Google AI Overview appears. A flat traffic line does not mean nothing is working.

Watch the sheet for direction: more of your own domains cited, your name appearing in answers, fewer gaps in your profiles.

FAQ

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

Publish short, direct answers on your key pages, then make sure your LinkedIn, Google listing and directory entries say the same thing. ChatGPT leans on sources it can corroborate. No tactic guarantees a citation, so check regularly instead.

How can you check whether AI search cites your brand?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions a buyer would ask, in Estonian and English. Record which domains are linked and whether your name appears in the answer. Repeat monthly, because results shift between days and prompts.

Is there an AI that gives citations?

Yes. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews usually show linked sources, and ChatGPT can when it searches the web. AI systems do not always provide citations, so an answer without links does not mean your brand was absent from the sources.

What to do this week

Citations come from being consistent and checkable in many places, not from one clever page. Start with the manual check in Step 2, then fix the first profile where your wording, address or services do not match.
